Obviously, fly fishing is weather dependent, and vastly different day by day. Primarily, we will be walking up rivers searching for trout, and using whatever method is deemed most productive for the day. I (the guide) will advise on current conditions, and what will be necessary to make sure you have the best day possible.
On a full day in the back country, you can expect to get away from the more crowded local rivers and experience a more classic fly fishing experience, where we sight, stalk and cast to amazing resident fish in some of New Zealand's finest scenery. We will often walk a bit longer, as these back country fisheries are very different to the local Taupo spawning tributaries. These fish are residents, and often a lot smarter. Although it is the best way to go, if you want a chance at very large rainbow and or brown trout in a pristine environment at all times of the season. The season for the back country is generally October 1st, through to the end of June. You will also need a New Zealand Fish and Game license to fish these areas.
A local day guiding will see you on one of our very famous Lake Taupo spawning rivers. These rivers are unique, in that when the winter comes, the fish collect at the river mouth. Waiting for the next rainfall to fill up the rivers, and as the rivers lower, the fish (predominantly Rainbow Trout) will run up the rivers in good numbers, and give the many anglers a good chance at intercepting them on their way to spawn. Although most of the fish are seen during the cooler months, many trout continue to make their way up the rivers over the summer months. But this is very dependent on the weather patterns and conditions. The Big Brown Trout will often move up these systems from December onwards. Giving even the most experienced angler a great challenge. You will need a department of conservation fishing license to fish these rivers. A full day or two, will give you the best experience, so you can relax and experience most of what these rivers have to offer.
A half day guiding is local only. So you'll get approximately 4hrs on one of the Taupo spawning rivers. These days are good for those just wanting to give the sport a try, or are time restricted and want to see what these rivers have to offer. You will have to provide your own snacks and refreshments for a half day.
