I’d just bought a new line to add to the collection and he’d been very helpful. When he said it was actually his day off I figured it was time to take the plunge and asked if he’d be happy to guide me for the rest of the day. What followed was simply one of the most enjoyable and educational experiences I’d ever had on a river. In spite of the howling southerly he showed me how to cheat the wind and spot fish in the turbulent water, before taking me to some more sheltered spots. It’s clear how much Hamish loves doing what he does and it quickly began to feel as if I was just on the water with a good mate who also happened to be incredibly skilful and knowledgeable. It was late afternoon before we left and I’d had a fantastic time. With his help I’d even caught fish with consecutive casts, and there’s a photo of 2 solid jacks cosying up in my net to prove it. More importantly, the amount of knowledge that was so freely given has made a huge difference to my enjoyment and success on rivers ever since. Until then I’d never considered being guided but now that I have, I’m already planning the next trip with Hamish. If my experience is anything to go by, it is simply the best investment you can make if you want to up your skills and increase your enjoyment on the water."
